Poker Slangs and Sayings - What Do They
Mean?
I know that if you are brand new to world of poker, you are
probably thinking what do these poker slangs actually mean?
Well, in this article, I will go over some of the more common
expressions, so you won't seem like such a newbie when you
first get started.
Believe it or not, after a few hands, you'll start to get the
lingo down.
Let's begin with some of the hands you might get and what they
are called by the pros.
Pair of Aces are called Pocket
Rockets
Pair of Kings are called
Cowboys
Pair of Queens are called The Hiltons or
The Dirty Duo.
Pair of Jacks are called
Hooks
There
are others but that should be more than enough to know
for a local game. Let's get to the nitty
gritty.
I'm
sure you've heard many people mention the
flop. You've probably heard that a
lot if you have watched any of the World Series
of Poker tournaments. It's real simple. The
flop just simply means the first three cards that the
dealer shows. So when you hear something like "here
comes the flop" you know the game is just
beginning.
There are a couple of different ways to describe the
flop.
For instance somebody might say He's hitting the
flop. When you hear that, you should be happy, because
it means the that the flop cards go really well with your hole
cards.
Another term is the post flop is up.
This basically means that the player has decided to bet (even
though he/she wasn't on the big blind) on the flop.
The turn just refers to the fourth card that is
shown in the community. When that card is revealed, chances are
some players will begin to fold.
The
river is the most exciting, because its when the last
card (5th card) is shown. The winner and losers of
the poker game will be determined on the
river.
This
is just some of the basic terminology that
is discussed in a poker game. After you
play a few hands, it will become like second nature
to you.
